A Sampler Saying Scissor Stand & Needleroll
Another vintage wooden Sylko cotton reel has been given a new lease of life as a scissor stand and needleroll. This time I have worked a saying from an old sampler, “From my hands to yours” which is stitched in backstitch with simple cross stitch motifs at either end.
To make this little treasure, I have used pure linen band from Vaupel & Heilenbeck, and the band is carefully lined in Liberty Lawn. I have attached the fiendishly-sharp-but-tiny chatelaine scissors with a co-ordinated twisted cord. When you are stitching, you can line up all the needles in use on the coloured lining.
The Scissor Stand & Needleroll is supplied boxed with a pair of chatelaine gold-plated scissors. The cotton reel measures 1.5in (4cm) high and 1.5 (4cm) across the top
This bobbin is another one-off but please check back for more in a little while. Each one will be individually stitched, inspired by a vintage reel and Liberty lawn.

The story of this little treasure
I am thrilled how popular my little Scissor Stands have proved this year. I really enjoy making them but have found it difficult to get the lovely vintage reels while we have been encouraged to stay at home so much. Thank goodness for a glorious sunny day at an outdoor brocante fair organised by The Country Brocante. I manged to find a few larger reels that are the perfect size for the linen band.
I have always been very fond of old wooden cotton reels and bobbins, and love adding to my collection. You will even find a giant one in my kitchen – I couldn’t leave the shop without a bobbin that had been upcycled into a wooden spoon rack. (Thank you again, Baileys Home Store!)
Whilst in charge at The Cross Stitch Guild, I did create some pretty kits involving reproduction cotton reels. (These were initially made for me by my lady wood turner, Jo Freeman, who has had to retire because of her health.) If you would like to stitch any of my scissor and needle holders, you will find them here.
