ABC Frayed Patch Stitcher’s Hussif

1 in stock

I think that Vaupel & Heilenbeck make the most marvellous linen bands and their red checked range is probably my favourite. I have made this Hussif (Housewife) with internal pockets made from eyelet band. The three alphabet letters on the front are hand embroidered and are taken from one of my antique French samplers.

The Hussif is lined in a piece of vintage French linen and has two pockets, checked linen tabs fastened with vintage linen buttons (to hold tools) and a two-button closure. You will find three CSG gold-plated needles, a Rosebud Ruler (made from recycled piano keys) and pair of stork scissors attached with a matching twisted cord.

I have included two special treasures this time – two real antique thread winders (probably made from bone), which will vary in each Hussif.

You can unfold the hussif where you are working, and all your tools will be at hand.

This limited project will arrive ready-made, boxed and ready to use.

When folded and buttoned, the hussif measures 5 x 7in (12.5 x 18cm). Unfolded it measures 14 x 7in (35.5 x 18cm).

The story of this little treasure

I have been cooking this idea or a while but since Brexit I can have more difficulty getting supplies from Germany, so it has taken longer than expected. The hand stitching on the front of the Hussif is an excerpt from a lovely old French sampler in my collection and is stitched on a frayed linen patch. I love red embroidery on unbleached linen and so this was a real pleasure to work. I also cannot resist stitching on little scraps of linen and creating frayed patches!
