Blackwork Acorns & Roses Notebook
This beautifully hand-bound notebook is one-of-a-kind by Kate Bowles. The spine is covered in ivory linen, with hand-worked Holbein stitch acorns and roses taken from my ‘Heartsease Sampler’ inspired by an original in The Goodhart Collection, which is now housed in Montecute House.
Dr Goodhart collected samplers for most of his life and treasured them long before it became the thing to do! His daughter-in-law told me that, as a young bride staying in the house, her job was to pull individual blinds down over each sampler so that they were not affected by the light.
This notebook fastens with a waxed linen cord and a divine Dorset button. I am in awe as making Dorset Buttons is a skill that has defeated me for years! The notebook measures 4.5 x 6in (11.5 x 15cm).

The story of this little treasure
I met Kate Bowles for the first time on my stand at the Knitting and Stitching Show in Harrogate some years ago. We got talking and she showed me an example of her hand-bound books. I haven’t been without one in my handbag since. One of my favourite books is one Kate made me some years ago to celebrate supplying Liberty of London for over 25 years. She had included my old hand-drawn designs of the Liberty building in Regent Street and used an old tape measure as part of the spine.
