Buttoned Vintage Kantha Workbox Weight

Out of stock

This little Workbox Weight (or pincushion, to be plain!) is made from a combination of stitched evenweave linen and a glorious fabric from India, known as Kantha. I have added a small cross stitch design from a Berlin pattern as a patch because those purples just have to be together, plus buttons and some pearl-headed pins. Added are a pair of superb Italian scissors attached with a matching twisted cord.

This treasure measures 4.5in (11.5cm) square and will come to you in a lovely presentation box.

The story of this little treasure

I met Tanya Burne of Running Stitches in October 2021 at the Brocante Fair at Daylesford in Oxfordshire and simply fell in love with her fabrics.  I managed to resist – I’m not sure how – the beautiful Kantha throws and cushions and bought some mixed pieces to play with. This is what Tanya says about her materials:

“Perfect in their Imperfections, vintage kantha throws are unique. A product of female resourcefulness and creativity, infused with the history and pride of their rich heritage. An age old Indian tradition that can be traced back 500 years. Based on thrift of the women and their ability to weave stories and love into these blankets. Women have saved their old saris to make quilts for centuries, as old cloth was thought to be lucky, and have a protective effect. Hand-stitched, these quilts are made with 3-5 five layers of vintage cotton sari. Sewn together with thousands and thousands of tiny running stitches. This gives the fabric its unique, slightly wrinkled effect. They are reversible offering two different sides.”
