Delphinium Embroidered Needle Roll

You may have noticed by now that I love needle rolls. I don’t think I have ever seen a modern one to buy, which is strange as they are a great way to keep needles safe and there is something rather special about the ritual of unrolling one of these little accessories when you are preparing to start stitching.

This beautiful needle roll was originally created as a counted stitch sampler for a class I taught here at Pinks Barn. It includes complex stitches like hemstitch, four-sided stitch, Rhodes stitch, rice stitch and drawn thread bands, a Hardanger heart and satin stitch. I have added the stitched piece to some gorgeous Liberty lawn, lined the inside with hand-dyed wool felt and added a shell button and pair of Italian gold-plated chatelaine scissors.

The needle roll measures 2.5 x 8.5in (6.5 x 21cm) and has a twisted cord closure. It is supplied gift boxed with three gold-plated needles.

I have a particular interest in band samplers and love to create them. Although my first love is counted cross stitch, I have, over the years developed a passion for all counted embroidery stitches. I feel it is so important to record all the stitches I find and keep them current, which is why I wrote The Stitch Book.
