Early Victorian Silk & Beadwork on Bristol Board Pinwheel

Out of stock

This exquisite pinwheel has been perfectly beaded on very fine perforated paper, or ‘Bristol Board’ as it was known in Victorian times. This is a particularly fine version of the paper with 24 stitches to one inch! The maker worked very cleverly to keep the pattern symmetrical, not always easy when working with such fine beads. The completed paper disks were mounted on silk and paper and I have added some pearl-headed pins.

This little treasure measures 5 x 3.5in (12.5 x 9cm).

The story of this little treasure

I spotted this pinwheel at the antiques market in Cirencester one day and naturally it had to come home with me! I am not sure what it is about pins, needles, pincushions and needlebooks but they do call to me… The beads used on this pinwheel are so tiny I had to do a double take. Even Mill Hill ‘Delica’ beads are not available at this size.
