Heartsease & Pastel Letters Notebook

This exquisite book is completely covered in ivory linen with hand-stitched extracts taken from a sampler called ‘Heartsease’, which I commissioned from the late Jane Napier and was inspired by Dr Goodhart’s collection of antique samplers. Dr Goodhart fell in love with the whole genre of band samplers and collected them for many years. I was fortunate to see his first exhibition in London during the 1980s and again a few years ago when the collection was donated to Montecute House.

The book has a linen ribbon closure and contains a wide variety of papers, card and envelope pages inside. It measures 4.5 x 6in (11.5 x 15cm).

The story of this little treasure

I met Kate Bowles for the first time on my stand at the Knitting and Stitching Show in Harrogate some years ago. We got talking and she showed me an example of her hand-bound books. I haven’t been without one in my handbag since. One of my favourite books is one Kate made me some years ago to celebrate supplying Liberty of London for over 25 years. She had included my old hand-drawn designs of the Liberty building in Regent Street and used an old tape measure as part of the spine.
