The Antique Sampler Silk Collection

This carefully curated collection of the silk threads has been a true labour of love for me and is heavily inspired by my sampler collection. I have spent quite a bit of time studying my own antiques and also the selection of old samplers I have lined up to share here on Finder of Treasures – watch this space for more details!

In many cases I know that an old original sampler would have been stitched in quite strong colours but, with that with the passing of time, the colour in the embroidery will have faded and that is how I design my samplers – to echo how the sampler looks to me now.

This selection would be simply perfect if used for a mixed sampler with alphabets, trees, flowers and insects and would have a wonderful dated feel to it.

It was hard to know when to stop, so this silk collection is one of the larger ones with 24 individual shades.

My silk thread originated from France and is hand-dyed in the USA. It is a spun silk thread with the beauty, lustre, and shine of silk but doesn’t catch on your hands – it is a joy to use. The size of one strand is comparable to other stranded yarns and I have found that I am happy with two strands for cross stitch on 28-count and 32-count linen. Of course, it is perfect for freestyle embroidery too.

To help you enjoy your threads even more, I have commissioned replica thread winders on which to keep them. Each winder is supplied with 3 yards (2.7m) of 12-ply silk, and there’s a little notch to make it easy to keep your threads well behaved.

The story of this little treasure

As you may well know by now, antique samplers are a real passion of mine. It was only matter of time before I would create a thread collection based on these beautifully faded tones. You can share my first sampler buying experience here, and look at one of my firm favourites here.
