Tiny Alphabet Needleroll & Scissor Stand

This dumpy little wooden cotton reel has been given a new lease of life as a tiny workstation. The wooden bobbin is padded so that it will take pins. The pure linen band is stitched by hand with a complete traditional alphabet in counted cross stitch, using colours inspired by the Sylko label. I have lined it in a pretty, colourful Liberty Lawn and attached the fiendishly-sharp-but-tiny chatelaine scissors with a co-ordinated twisted cord. When you are stitching you can line up all the needles in use on the coloured lining.

The Tiny Alphabet Needleroll & Scissor Stand is supplied boxed with a beautiful pair of chatelaine scissors, pearl pins and three size 28 gold-plated needles. The cotton reel measures 1.75in (4.5cm) high and 2in (5cm) across the top.

This bobbin is a one-off for the moment but please check back for more. Each one will be individually stitched, inspired by a vintage reel and Liberty fabrics.

The story of this little treasure

I have always been very fond of old wooden cotton reels and bobbins, and love adding to my collection. You will even find a giant one in my kitchen – I couldn’t leave the shop without a bobbin that had been upcycled into a wooden spoon rack. (Thank you again, Baileys Home Store!)

I only had to mention to a friend that I needed a few more reels, then a lovely parcel arrived full of little beauties. There is something rather lovely about the old reels with their logos and worn labels. When you see that a paper label has been pierced by being on a sewing machine at one time in its life, you can’t help but wonder about what was stitched and the story it could tell.

Whilst in charge at The Cross Stitch Guild, I did create some pretty kits involving reproduction cotton reels. (These were initially made for me by my lady wood turner, Jo Freeman, who has had to retire because of her health.) If you would like to stitch any of my scissor and needle holders, you will find them here.
