White-on-White Embroidered Notebook

This small book is completely covered in ivory linen with hand-stitched extracts taken from a Sarah Maydman’s sampler stitched originally in 1693 when she was only 10 years old. Artisan Kate Bowles has selected a piece from the replica sampler charted for me by the late Jane Napier. This part of the sampler features a variety of stitches including cross stitch, satin stitch, four-sided stitch, buttonhole wheels and Holbein stitch.

The notebook has a waxed twisted cord closure and includes a variety of recycled, papers, card and envelope pages. It measures 3.5 x 4.5in (9 x 11.5cm)

The story of this little treasure

I met Kate Bowles for the first time on my stand at the Knitting and Stitching Show in Harrogate some years ago. We got talking and she showed me an example of her hand-bound books. I haven’t been without one in my handbag since. One of my favourite books is one Kate made me some years ago to celebrate supplying Liberty of London for over 25 years. She had included my old hand-drawn designs of the Liberty building in Regent Street and used an old tape measure as part of the spine.
