Antique Zig-zag Scissor Stand & Needleroll

I think this is my favourite size and shape of wooden bobbin and, joy of joys, I have found someone who can supply more for me to keep making my treasures. Not only does she supply them quickly, but they arrive cleaned and waxed ready to decorate.

This time, I have added this colourful zig-zag ribbon to a section of pure unbleached linen band so that it fits my bobbin perfectly. Lined in wool felt and the scissors attached with a twisted cord and shell buttons, this makes a perfect little workstation. It measures 3.5in (9cm) tall and 2in (5cm) across.

Completed with three gold-plated needles and three pearl-headed pin, this treasure wrapped in tissue and gift boxed.

I have always loved antique stitching tools and studied them to come up with my own inventions. There can’t be many hobbies where you can actually make your own tools! Wooden bobbins have always appealed to me and are a great start point for stitching tools like my little workstations. I find antique versions of various sizes at brocantes and in favourite junk shops, but they are not so easy to find as they once were. I rather hope that using less plastic means we might have a return to sewing threads being sold on wooden bobbins!
