Created originally for a class at Pinks Barn, this treasure is a one-off treat. Worked on linen in counted cross stitch with a hand-stitched folded hem, this is a very special worked model.

The needlebook is lined in antique white linen with felt pages and four gold-plated needles ready for you inside. The scissor pocket is a carefully made chatelaine shape with alphabets from my Catherine Archer sampler – a unique source!

The needlebook measures 6.5 x 4.25in (16.5 x 11cm) when unfolded. The chatelaine measures 2.5 x 3in (6.5 x 7.5cm) and includes a pair of beautiful Italian chatelaine scissors.

This unique treasure will be supplied wrapped in tissue paper and gift boxed and will include the needlebook, chatelaine, gold-plated scissors and four-gold plated needles.

If you would like to stitch some of Catherine’s motifs yourself, or feel brave enough to tackle the whole sampler, you will find it here. Or you might like some of the fabric I have had printed to echo Catherine’s skills.

The story of this little treasure

I had a very rewarding visit to the Muller Trust Museum in Bristol, in the west of England. I own a sampler worked by Catherine Archer, an orphan who arrived at Ashley Down Orphanage when she was seven years of age. Ashley Down was the name given to George Muller’s orphanages in Bristol. I was keen to find out more about the stitcher of my treasured sampler.

My sampler was worked after 1856 when Catherine joined the orphanage – we know that she survived to maturity and went into service in London. Her sampler is worked in one thread of red cotton over one thread of the linen which is 40 to the inch. I have enjoyed stitching motifs from Catherine’s sampler so many times and I was particularly pleased with the way this little needlebook and scissor poppet turned out. Hard to part with!
