Faux Scrimshaw Needle Box
Hand crafted here in the Cotswolds, this delightful ovel box is such a treasure. Whether you keep your gold needles inside or house your earing backs, it will look vintage and valuable on your shelf.
The original line drawing was done by my friend of over 30 years, Sarah Jane Gillespie, and is exclusive to me. The box has a felt bottom to prevent it scratching a tabletop and is supplied boxed. It measures 4 x 2.5in (10 x 7cm).
If you like the scrimshaw effect, then you might like these magnetic needle holders too!

The story of this little treasure
Scrimshaw is the name given to a type of handmade craft created by carving the teeth and bones of whales and other marine mammals. The objects are largely the result of mariners being confronted with time to occupy at sea and access to a ready supply of materials. Sailing, especially whaling, involved long periods of time when there was nothing to do and so this craft became very popular. Replica scrimshaw is generally quite common, but the real thing is made from bone, whale teeth and even ivory.
