Faux Scrimshaw Cotton Reel Needle Holder

This charming magnetic needle holder is moulded from one of my vintage bobbins. Hand crafted in the Cotswolds, this pretty reel is magnetic and is the ideal place for your needles. Made from resin and then dyed to look like scrimshaw, it would make a perfect stocking filler this Christmas.

Supplied boxed and measures 1 x 1.25in (2.5 x 3cm).

Scrimshaw is the name given to a type of handmade craft created by carving the teeth and bones of whales and other marine mammals. The objects are largely the result of mariners being confronted with time to occupy at sea and access to a ready supply of materials. Sailing, especially whaling, involved long periods of time when there was nothing to do and so this craft became very popular. Replica scrimshaw is generally quite common, but the real thing is made from bone, whale teeth and even ivory.
