Martha Derby Sampler Study Box

3 in stock

I bought this sampler as part of a small collection of pieces from Witney Antiques and it is a personal favourite of mine. I do not know for certain, but I suspect this is a mourning sampler as it is worked in so much black thread.

This sampler is partly so effective as Martha worked the large alphabet in Algerian Eye stitch which does have a dramatic look. The linen used was not evenweave, so your version may appear squarer than portrait when stitched.

Martha’s sampler is 113 x 158 stitches, which means it would measure 8 x 11.25in (20 x 28.5cm) if you stitch on 28-count linen.

In your lovely JG Book Box, you will find:

  • A large picture of your sampler
  • The beautifully printed chart on A3 paper
  • A copy of my book Stitching your own Little Piece of History
  • A gold-plated needle
  • Faux-ivory thread holder with two shades of thread for an optional folded hem (detailed instructions for this are also included)

The story of this little treasure

I have enjoyed collecting old samplers for over 20 years and love living with them hung on my walls. If only they could talk, just imagine the stories they could tell of the young stitchers creating them.

Recreating a sampler is a fascinating way to step back in time. If you would like to know more about how my Sampler Study Boxes came to be, you may enjoy this Jotting.

This sampler is part of my third mini collection of charts for you to enjoy. I have limited numbers of my previous releases available if you would like one:
